Ihsanoglu and Al Arabi Review Developments of Situation in Syria

Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), met with Dr. Nabil Al Arabi, Secretary General of the League of Arab States, in Cairo on 27 June, 2013. The meeting focused on the developments of the situation in Syria and modalities of cooperation between the two parties regarding the humanitarian aspects and the possibility of coordinating with the parties concerned in the international community for the convening of the Genera 2. conference. The two parties emphasized the need for the Geneva 2. conference on the Syrian issue, to be held at a broader regional and international level with the participation of the active institutions and parties, with a particular stress on the importance of the participation of both the OIC and the Arab League. In their meeting, Ihsanoglu and Al Arabi, also underlined the need to intensify cooperation between them with regard to the degenerated humanitarian situation in Syria, in addition to the need for efforts to put an early end to the bloodshed there. In parallel, the two patties also discussed the developments of the situation in Iraq, expressed the deep concern over the rising violence, and reiterated their intent to put in further efforts in this respect. Additionally, the two parties further reviewed the escalated sectarian and denominational conflicts in certain Islamic societies and stressed the need for the concerned institutions to act for a redressal of the situation.
