**May 14, 2014 -** Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“Canada expresses its sincere gratitude to Lakhdar Brahimi, the joint UN-Arab League Special Representative on Syria, for his efforts to bring peace to the people of Syria.

“Mr. Brahimi has been a tireless advocate for a peaceful solution for the world’s worst humanitarian disaster. I commend him for his personal commitment and courage, even in the face of the Assad regime’s extreme intransigence, in his work for the people of Syria.

“I am proud that Canada was among the very first to provide financial and political support to the office of the Special Representative. I wish him well in the road ahead.”
