We welcome the fact that the parties to the conflict in Syria have agreed on the establishment of a Syrian constitutional committee and thank UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen for his tireless efforts in the process to bring about a political solution to the conflict. The constitutional committee is a first and important step in this direction. It is crucial that, as announced, the committee takes up its work in the next few weeks under the auspices of the United Nations in Geneva. We hope that this process will open the door to further political change in Syria within the framework of UN Security Council Resolution 2254. Only in this way can the conflict be resolved permanently and sustainably.
