Syria Condemns Blockage of Humanitarian Convoy to Suwayda and Warns of Serious Security Repercussions
Damascus, 20 July 2025 Since the early hours of Wednesday, amid escalating tensions and acts of violence in Suwayda Governorate and the subsequent tragic events resulting from the Israeli aggression on Syrian territory, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, in coordination with the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Affairs, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Affairs, and the Governors of Daraa and Suwayda, initiated preparations for the mobilisation of a humanitarian convoy as soon as the security situation permitted.
Despite repeated attempts since Wednesday, the humanitarian aid convoy organised by the Syrian Government has been unable to enter Suwayda. Earlier today, the outlawed armed militias loyal to Hikmat Al-Hijri denied the entry of the convoy, which was lead by three ministers and governors from the Syrian Government. Only a limited number of Syrian Arab Red Crescent vehicles were allowed to proceed. The convoy is carrying essential medical supplies and humanitarian assistance, supported by international and local organisations. The Ministry of Health dispatched 20 ambulances as part of the emergency response, which were also denied entry, pending safe and unimpeded access to those in need.
In parallel, the Ministry has worked with the relevant authorities to secure the evacuation of a number of staff and personnel from humanitarian and international organisations present in Suwayda, in order to ensure their safety.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with all partners, has made every possible effort to enhance preparedness, ensure the availability of necessary supplies in warehouses, and confirm the readiness of humanitarian convoys to deploy as soon as conditions allow.
The Ministry underscores that the deterioration of the security situation is a direct consequence of the flagrant Israeli intervention, followed by the withdrawal of Syrian security forces. This has resulted in the loss of the ability to uphold order and stability in the region, including the capacity to create conditions conducive to continued humanitarian operations and the provision of basic needs for the civilian population.
The Ministry further expresses its deep concern over the continued disappearance of the Head of the Civil Defence Centre in Suwayda, who was abducted four days ago by the outlawed armed militias. His whereabouts and wellbeing remain unknown.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates affirms that its efforts will not relent, and it will continue, in coordination with local and international partners, to closely monitor developments until all necessary assistance reaches our people in Suwayda and the safe return of all residents and the displaced to their homes is assured.
