مكتب الأمم المتحدة لشؤون نزع السلاح
أنشئ مكتب الأمم المتحدة لشؤون نزع السلاح في كانون الثاني/يناير 1998 باسم إدارة شؤون نزع السلاح، التي كانت جزءا من برنامج الأمين العام للإصلاح، وفقا لتقريره إلى الجمعية العامة (A/51/950). وقد أنشئ المكتب أصلا في عام 1982 بتوصية من دورة الجمعية العامة الاستثنائية الثانية المكرسة لنزع السلاح. وفي عام 1992 تغيّر اسمه إلى مركز شؤون نزع السلاح وكان يتبع إدارة الشؤون السياسية. وفي أواخر عام 1997، أعيدت تسميته إدارة شؤون نزع السلاح، وفي عام 2007 أصبح يسمى مكتب الأمم المتحدة لشؤون نزع السلاح.
ويعزز المكتب
نزع السلاح النووي وعدم الانتشار النووي.
دعم نظم نزع السلاح فيما يتعلق بأسلحة الدمار الشامل الأخرى والأسلحة الكيميائية والبيولوجية.
جهود نزع السلاح في مجال الأسلحة التقليدية، وبخاصة الألغام الأرضية والأسلحة الصغيرة، وهي الأسلحة المفضلة في النزاعات المعاصرة.
ويوفر المكتب الدعم الفني والتنظيمي لتحديد المعايير في مجال نزع السلاح من خلال عمل الجمعية العامة ولجنتها الأولى، وهيئة نزع السلاح، ومؤتمر نزع السلاح، وغير ذلك من الهيئات. ويعزز المكتب تدابير نزع السلاح من خلال الحوار والشفافية وبناء القدرات في المسائل العسكرية، ويشجع الجهود الإقليمية لنزع السلاح؛ ويشمل ذلك سجل الأمم المتحدة للأسلحة التقليدية، والمحافل الإقليمية.
ويوفر المكتب أيضا المعلومات الموضوعية والمحايدة والمستكملة عن مسائل وأنشطة نزع السلاح المتعددة الأطراف للدول الأعضاء، والدول الأطراف في الاتفاقات المتعددة الأطراف، والمنظمات والمؤسسات الحكومية الدولية، والإدارات والوكالات التابعة لمنظومة الأمم المتحدة، والمؤسسات البحثية والتعليمية، والمجتمع المدني، وبخاصة المنظمات غير الحكومية، ووسائل الإعلام، وعامة الجمهور.
ويساند المكتب وضع وتنفيذ التدابير العملية لنزع السلاح بعد انتهاء النزاع، مثل نزع سلاح المقاتلين السابقين وتسريحهم، ومساعدتهم في معاودة الاندماج في المجتمع المدني.
