Syrian Refugees Facing Deportation in Egypt

Press Release

Syrian Coalition

November 17, 2014

The Syrian Coalition is concerned by reports that the Egyptian authorities are planning to deport scores of Syrians and Palestinian Syrians back to Syria. Those people, who are held in squalid conditions in Egypt, had their lives shattered. Some of them run the risk of being arrested by regime authorities immediately upon arrival. Most of them have absolutely no place to go, no means of livelihood, and no sources of income whatsoever. To turn our backs on them is to fail to uphold noble values that bind us together as human beings.

Amnesty International reported on Friday 14, that “the National Security Department within the [Egyptian] Ministry of Interior has issued deportation orders against at least 64 of the refugees – who could be deported at any time – even though the Public Prosecutor office in Alexandria ordered their release.”

To send refugees back to where they are inevitably going to face unfathomable suffering is not only legally prohibited but also morally unacceptable. We urge the Egyptian authorities to reconsider their decision and provide basic needs for those refugees who has the right to live a decent dignified life.
