Head of UN Chemical Weapons Investigation Team Arrives in Damascus
Media Statement

July 26, 2013
The Syrian Coalition welcomes the UN chemical weapons investigation team, headed by Mr. Ake Sellstrom.
The Coalition reiterates the need for the team to have unfettered access into all parts of Syria to carry out its investigations.
Evidence gathered from Syrian civilians, in addition to reports by Turkey, France, UK, and the U.S. confirm Assad has used chemical weapons in different parts of Syria. This is considered a blatant breach of international conventions and furthermore a crime against humanity.
Members of the Syrian Coalition are confident that Mr. Sellstrom’s team intends to operate in a professional and impartial manner, but have serious concerns about Mr. Sellstrom’s ability to conduct a thorough investigation. Assad has stated time and time again that he will restrict the movement of the team and limit access to locations the team plans to visit. The Assad regime has proven to be a master of manipulation and political gimmickry. Therefore, the Syrian Coalition and the Syrian Military Council reiterate their offer of unconditional cooperation and call for the investigation team to visit liberated areas where they can conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
We ask for mercy for our martyrs, health for our wounded, and freedom for our detainees.
Long live Syria and its people, free and with honor.
