Statement on Unverified Video Depicting the Execution of Two Persons
Media Statement
Syrian Coalition
Istanbul, Turkey
June 28, 2013
The Syrian Coalition has ordered an investigation into a video posted on YouTube depicting the execution of two persons. All necessary tests will be done to ascertain the time and place of the incident. If the investigation points to fabrication, legal action will be taken against those who involved in the fabrication process. If verified, the Syrian Coalition, in collaboration with the Syrian Military Council, will pursue those responsible, arrest them and commit them to a fair trial.
Primary results show the sound is likely tampered with, but the investigation remains in progress and in pursuit of conclusive results. It must be noted, however, that the video was published on a pro-Assad network. Recent reports indicate that the Assad regime has started to fabricate such videos to discredit the Syrian Revolution, based on Russia’s advice.
We urge that everyone who has information relating to this incident to report to the Syrian Coalition bodies in liberated areas. We reiterate the importance of maintaining the rule of the law. The Syrian Coalition’s official bodies, including the Syrian Military Council, are the only bodies authorized to enforce the law.
The Syrian Coalition stresses the need to abide by the law, reject sectarianism, and protect the lives and property of all people. We also reaffirm our commitment, as well as the Syrian Military Council’s commitment, to international laws and the Geneva Convention.
We ask for Mercy for our martyrs, health for our wounded, and freedom for our detainees.
Long live Syria and its people, free and with honor.
