German Government steps up humanitarian assistance for Syrians affected by the crisis
In view of the escalating violence in Syria and the worsening humanitarian situation, the German Government has allocated a further sum of approx. 500,000 euros for humanitarian assistance for Syrians in need, bringing the total to 8.5 million euros to date.
Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement in Paris today (6 July):
> “We must not cease our efforts to alleviate the suffering caused by the conflict in Syria.
> The Assad regime unleashed this season of violence; it must finally end the bloodshed and permit comprehensive and unrestricted humanitarian access to Syria.”
The funds are intended to help Syrians in need, both inside the country and outside its borders.
Since the crisis erupted over a year ago, the Federal Foreign Office has supported national and international humanitarian organizations which provide assistance in accordance with the principles of neutrality, independence and impartiality, principles to which the German Government also subscribes. The Federal Foreign Office additionally supports the United Nations’ role in coordinating the humanitarian efforts.
