Enforced disappearance is one of the most serious crimes described as crimes against

humanity. The catastrophe goes beyond the disappeared person, to his family, relatives and

friends who live in agony and anxiety for his/her fate, and to the society - which is entirely

targeted to intimidate and subjugate it and to confiscate the rights of its members to freedom

of expression, freedom, safety, dignity and life, and this causes everyone to become victims;

The Assad regime uses enforced disappearance as a basic strategy to rule Syria, and adopts

it as a tool to take revenge on the people who demand the fight against corruption and tyranny,

and dedicates it as a means of putting pressure on opponents, witnesses, journalists, activists,

lawyers, judges, doctors, those interested in the truth and all human rights defenders;

During the current decade, the international and independent Syrian organizations have

marked the Syrian people as the most suffering people among the peoples of the world a

result of this grave and continuing crime. Despite the numbers they could document from those

who were able to access their data, the true number of the disappeared in Syria remains

unknown. According to our estimates, most Syrian families were subjected to the nightmares

the enforced disappearance one their members, and that the psychological, health,

physical and economic effects are still affecting their lives;

As the world commemorates today the memory of the victims of enforced disappearance, the

Assad regime continues to obscure the fate of the missing, and is carrying out new campaigns

of kidnapping, disappearance, torture and liquidation against Syrians in its areas of control
