Within the Framework of Astana Meeting, OIC Calls for Ending Killings and Destruction in Syria

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) followed with great interest the talks on the Syrian crisis held in Astana, capital city of Kazakhstan, on 4 May 2017, which culminated in a deal creating de-escalation zones including many Syrian provinces.

The OIC General Secretariat looks forward to the adoption of practical steps and means that would lead to the implementation of this agreement and therefore put an end to the waves of killings and destruction against civilians in Syria in recent years, as well as the bloodshed against innocent Syrians, the displacement of thousands of families which, after having claimed their citizenship and political participation rights, are now asking for the basic rights of decent human life in refugee camps.

In this vein, the General Secretariat confirmed its complete readiness to cooperate constructively with regional and international organizations to help the Syrian people overcome the current deteriorating situation. It also reaffirms its commitment to political solutions to the crisis in Syria away from the military escalation, which has had serious repercussions on the country, the region and on international security.

The OIC also reaffirmed its commitment to the Geneva 1 Communiqué and to relevant UN resolutions, which insisted on the need to preserve the unity of the Syrian territories and called for the adoption of peaceful political solutions to end the crisis in Syria and ensure security and stability in the region.
