Statement by the Spokesperson of High Representative

Catherine Ashton on the ceasefire initiative in Syria

The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign

Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement

today:

"The High Representative reiterates her full support to the efforts of Joint Special Representative

Lakhdar Brahimi, including for his attempt to achieve a ceasefire during the Holy holiday of Eid alAdha.

The High Representative deeply regrets that after the initial decrease in violence, military actions

were carried out by both sides in breach of the ceasefire.

The High Representative expresses the hope that the parties could agree and commit to a future

ceasefire, which would provide the basis so that a political process can be developed and followed

through."
