STATEMENT

by the Spokesperson on the appointment of Mr Staffan de Mistura

as UN Special Representative for Syria

"We welcome the appointment of Mr Staffan de Mistura as the United Nations Special

Representative for Syria.

Mr de Mistura's long standing experience in the region and his excellent reputation as a

seasoned and skilful diplomat make him a very good choice for dealing with an increasingly

complex reality in Syria and its neighbourhood.

The continuing violent conflict in the country has already profoundly affected the Middle East

region endangering not only the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, but also its

neighbours. The challenges of the civil war in Syria, including unprecedented humanitarian

and security ones, can only be solved through a comprehensive and Syrian-led political

process that would meet the democratic aspirations of the Syrian people.

We call on the international community and all Syrian parties to grant full and concrete

support to the mission of Mr de Mistura. The EU will use all means at its disposal to assist

him in his new mission."
