Statement by the Spokesperson of High Representative

Catherine Ashton following the discussions on Syria

at the LAS summit in Qatar

"The High Representative has followed with great interest the statements and discussions on Syria

on the occasion of the summit of the League of Arab States in Doha, Qatar.

A political process is needed more than ever to end the bloodshed and destruction in Syria. It is

vital that all efforts to this end be kept alive.

In this respect the High Representative salutes the vision and leadership of Mr Moaz Al-Khatib,

President of the Syrian Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces. On several

occasions, she welcomed Mr Al-Khatib's courageous efforts to engage with representatives of the

Syrian regime and launch a dialogue leading to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

The High Representative encourages all Syrian opposition forces to act in a united way towards a

democratic transition in Syria."
